Page 1 of 5 Wildflowers and Triumph Sprint In the previous month, I had already been on sport touring trips to Arizona and Death Valley on my 2000 Triumph Sprint ST, so taking a quick trip up the coast to Morro Bay shouldn't have been a big deal. I'm sure that eventually, one of these trips will be uneventful, but not this one; by the end of the first day, I would find myself on a freeway at 70MPH, in sixth gear, wondering how I was going to stop the motorcycle.

After deciding earlier in the week that we were going to go to Morro Bay, I booked us a room for Saturday night at the Day's Inn in town and come Saturday morning, we were off. The easiest way to get up there, is also, fortuantely the most scenic. California's Highway One (PCH or Pacific Coast Highway as it is commonly referred to from Santa Barbara on south) has been written about as one of the world's best drives and it's absolutely true. Robyn and I were already pretty familiar with the stretch running from our old apartment in Playa Del Rey all the way through Malibu, so we didn't pay too much attention to it. There is also inevitable road construction in that area that can cause nasty traffic congestion so it was best to get out west of Point Dume as fast as possible.

Once over that hump though, we started to explore a little bit, some of it more eventful than others. One road we tried was the "Coastal Scenic Drive" through Port Hueneme (pronounced why-NEE-MEE). After 10 miles or so of strip mall encrusted surface streets, that road proved to be neither scenic, nor coastal. So back onto the Highway 1 and up through Ventura where we spotted a sign for "Western PCH". NOw at this point, the freeway was about 100 yards from the Pacific Ocean, so I was a little curious as to where this "Western PCH" street was. Well, after pulling off the freeway, we learned that it was a road that is now closed behind big barricades. Of course, those barricades weren't necessarily big enough to stop the passage of a 2000 Triumph Sprint ST with a dedicated rider, so we passed through the white concrete K-Rails and headed under the freeway to park at a little secluded beach. The only things there were the beach, a sunbather and a seal pup taking a nap on the beach. Not a bad find. In the not so far distance there was also a good view of that jetty that heads out to the island with what I imagine is a brutally expensive restaurant.

After taking a little break there, we got right back onto the freeway and continued towards the Central Coast. When we got to Gaviota, we made a left to break off of HWY101 to stay on HWY1. As soon as we made the transition we were treated to the lush green and profuse wildflowers that this area is well known for in the spring.

(Of course, it just wouldn't be a good motorcycle sport touring trip, if at one point I demonstrated my complete inability to compensate for depth of field)
