Old Creek Road
Old Creek Road
We went back to the hotel and checked out and the front desk agreed to let us leave our backpack and tank bag behind the front desk.  We wanted to go for a quick ride around to try to see if there were good twisties somewhere inland, and though that maybe if the guys by the Triumph garage were around, they could give us some tips.  Sure enough, not only did they have a recommendation, but the road the recommended had just been cleaned and paved.  In fact, somewhat like the machinist the day before, the guy who paved the road was standing right there to suggest the road itself!  I never did learn who the guy was that owned all those bikes, but man is he connected.

So out to Old Creek Road we went to find some of the most glorious riding that I've ever found inside of California.  This had everything, wildflowers on the side of the road in huge bunches, large groves of avocado trees, curve after curve after curve, and to top it all, a fresh clean sparkling black ribbon of post-it-note-like-asphalt.  I was worried at first that with the warmth of the spring day and the fresh pavement, some oil would be left, but that road was more tar sticky than anything else.  The two day old paint of the center lines stood out in such high contrast from the glistening roadbed, that it almost looked unreal.

Old Creek Road isn't very long, only running about 10 miles between HWY1 and HWY46, but it was so much fun to ride, that I dropped Robyn off at the 46 end of it with the camera and just road it back and forth two more times, getting a good feel for it.  Robyn was kind enough to take a couple of actions shots of me, in addition to filling the camera with even more wildflower photos.  There were California Golden Poppies and Sweetpeas everywhere you looked along with lupins and a whole bunch of other stuff whose name I have either forgotten or never learned.

After riding the Sprint ST back and forth a few times, Robyn saddled up again and we headed up 46 a bit to explore a little bit and see if there were any other sneaky little roads to poach.  Not really knowing the area, we didn't see any, but we did run across a little placed called York Mountain Wine.  The tasting room was almost deserted, but that didn't matter, because Robyn got to play with a kitten, much to her pleasure.  So for those of you keeping score, that's a seal pup, a sea otter, a squirrel and a kitten.  Not bad at all.

The trip was heading to a close, and we had 200 miles to go to get home.  It was back to the Day's Inn to pick up the gear, load up the bike and then run the butt burning miles off as fast as possible.  The wind had picked up a bit, so we ran into the teeth of it for about 50 miles or so which really puts a strain on the shoulders and neck.  When we finally got home, we were plenty sore and were ready for a nice relaxing dinner.  We walked down the street to Cantalini's, had some pasta, and called it a night.
