Back in LA I was mulling over the possibilities.  I figure I could call a tow truck company and have the bike taken to the nearest Triumph dealer.  The tow truck would probably be around $100 and god knows what an opportunistic dealer would squeeze out of my wallet knowing I was completely at their mercy.  I posted a topic begging for help on a sport touring message board and got some excellent suggestions.  George of Probity Cycle was mentioned several times in the forum and I thought, with that many people suggesting it, I’d be a fool not to check it out.

George went and picked up my Trumpet, took it to his shop in Mesa and prepared to inspect the rear tire to see if it could be repaired.  He’d also swap out the oil with his State Trooper approved Torco brand crankcase oil.  Any man that has an exclusive contract to repair cop bikes in the greater urban area of a major city is OK to work on my bike any day of the week.

As it turns out, it appeared that the tire had a slice in it, just up from the sidewall in the meat of tread; a sheet metal puncture or some kid with a pocket knife.  I’ll never know.  It was still far enough out on the curvature though that patching it would be a risky proposition.  A new tire it would be.  He’d have the tire on Friday and could mount and balance it, swap the oil and I’d be good to go.

That’s when it struck me.  I’d be in Phoenix, on Friday morning, a motorcycle with new shoes and new oil waiting for me and a whole weekend in front of me.  I’d be a FOOL not to take advantage of this.  That’s when I made the plan.   I’d ride from Phoenix up north on I-17 and go through Sedona before heading to Williams and spending the night.  Then I’d spend all day Saturday at a leisurely pace heading out early to see the Grand Canyon with the sun still low on the horizon; that would be perfect to set up the shadows needed to take striking pics of that maw of the Earth.  Then in the late morning / afternoon, I’d swing around the east side and up over Jacob’s Lake and head down into Utah, passing through Zion National Park around Sunset to capture the shadows there before zipping on down into Nevada to spend Saturday night in Mesquite.  Sunday would deliver me from Mesquite to Vegas for late breakfast with Robyn (where she was visiting her brother) and then on back home to Los Angeles.
